Our Cover - Artist Unk White has captured what is perhaps half the delight of a holiday - the planning of it. Most of us of course can only dream of that voyage overseas; though we may still look at travel folders. All can really plan a holiday.

Serial adventure strip The Spanish Sword from Australian Woman's Mirror featured above. Artist unknown.

Edith Alsop (1871 - 1958) original painting mounted on board. Alsop was initially active as a cartoonist/illustrator in the early twentieth century before moving into printmaking and fine arts. I'm not sure what this illustration was from, possibly unpublished. Found a couple weeks ago in a basket of old English annuals at a local market.

Original painted art board by English Illustrator Walt Howarth (1928 - 2008). Howarth produced numerous annual covers and illustrations over a sixty year career. Example above from a UK reprint comic of Australian character The Phantom Ranger originally published in Australia by Frew.

Two covers for western digest size story magazines by prolific golden age comics maker Peter Chapman (1925 - 2016).

Australian reprint of US newspaper strip Scorchy Smith. Cover artist unknown.

Three painted Wally and the Major covers by Stan Cross.

Fashion Plate Fannie - Will Donald

Whilst researching Will Donald for the forthcoming The Cartoons of Will Donald I wanted to get a sample of his newspaper strip Fashion Plate Fannie (1923-1931) and managed to track down a children's supplement (Star Twinkles) for the Auckland Star with Donald's strip filling half a tabloid page. I was also handed a couple dozen isolated clipped panels of Fashion Plate Fannie, clipped from the disintegrating papers. Fashion Plate Fannie is notable as one of the few Australian strips featured in New Zealand newspapers alongside May Gibbs' Tiggy Touchwood, Jimmy Bancks' Us Fellers, and Pat Sullivan's Felix the Cat.

Each isolated panel below is from a different week's installment of Fashion Plate Fannie.

Delayed from last year The Cartoons of Will Donald will be out in March 2015 from Pikitia Press. Collecting the first six months of Donald's political cartoons form the Worker newspaper published in 1921. The original book has been expanded to include samples of Donald's comic book work and cartoons by his predecessors at the Worker Adam Plass and Claude Marquet.

The Cartoons of Will Donald

A collection of the early work of one of Australia’s pioneers of cartooning, Will Donald.  Donald produced cartoons for socialist newspaper, The Australian Worker socialist, from 1921 -1944.  This collection reproduces in chronological order six months of cartoons from Donald’s first work in March 1921. Donald’s work like his predecessor at The Worker, Adam Plass,  depicted the growing pains of Australia’s unionised workforce and Australian people at odds with the William Morris ”Billy” Hughes led Nationalist Party Government.

Will Donald also contributed to mainstream newspapers of the period with political cartoons and cartoon strips, notably Fashion Plate Fanny. From the 1920’s to late ’40’s Donald created some of Australia’s first original comic books.
